Summer Skin Treatments: What to Do (and what to skip) for Your Best Skin Yet
Every summer, we hear it: "Wait… can I even do treatments when it's sunny out?"
Short answer: Yes, with a little common sense.
Sun exposure does matter for certain treatments, and we will always tell you exactly where the lines are. But if you are even moderately responsible with SPF and not actively trying to roast yourself, summer is not a pause button for your skin goals.
First, Let's Talk About the Sun
UV exposure is the biggest variable in how your skin heals and responds to treatments. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive, which means it is more likely to react if you go straight from your appointment to a full day in the sun like nothing happened.
This is not a reason to avoid treatments. It is a reason to act like someone who owns sunscreen. SPF 30 or higher, reapply every two hours when you are outside, wear a hat, find some shade. It is not complicated, but it does matter.
Botox and Fillers: Completely Season-Proof
Let's start with the easiest yes.
Botox, Dysport, and dermal fillers do not care about the sun. These treatments work below the surface of the skin, so UV exposure does not impact how they settle or heal.
Summer is actually one of the busiest times for injectables, which tracks. You are in more photos, at more events, and generally more visible. Botox softens the lines that do not match how you feel, and filler restores structure and volume in a way that still looks like you, just well rested.
There is no "right season" for injectables. If you have been thinking about it, this is a very low-risk place to start.
Bio-Stimulators: Start Now, Thank Yourself Later
Sculptra and PlasmaSculpt are also fully summer-safe, and starting now is quietly genius.
These treatments work over time, building collagen gradually over several weeks. A full series is typically spaced out over a few months, which means if you start in early summer, you are hitting your stride right as fall rolls in. You will look fresher, firmer, and just a little more put together without anyone being able to figure out why.
Post-care is simple. Avoid direct sun on the treated area for a few days, wear your SPF, and let your body do the work.
Microneedling: Yes, Just Don't Be Chaotic About It
Microneedling is one of our favorites for improving texture, tone, fine lines, and overall skin quality. It is also the one that requires the most strategy in the summer.
After treatment, your skin is in repair mode. If you layer in heavy sun exposure during that window, you increase your risk of hyperpigmentation. Translation: not ideal.
The solution is easy. Do not book it the day before a lake weekend. Give yourself a few lower-key days after your appointment. Stay consistent with SPF.
For clients who are not constantly in direct sun, microneedling with PRP is absolutely worth it. It smooths, brightens, and restores bounce in a way that topical products simply cannot compete with.
Laser Hair Removal: Keep Going, Just Don't Tan
Laser hair removal is very much still in play during summer, with one rule: no tan on the treatment area.
The laser targets pigment in the hair, and when the surrounding skin is also pigmented from a tan, the contrast drops and the risk of irritation goes up.
Areas that are typically covered, like underarms, bikini area, and legs, are usually easy to manage. Avoid direct sun exposure on those areas for about two weeks before and after treatment, wear SPF, and stay consistent.
This is a long game. Six to eight sessions gets you where you want to go, so staying on schedule now sets you up for a much easier next summer.
BBL, IPL, and Photofacials: Proceed With Caution
This is the category where we slow things down a bit in summer.
These treatments target pigment and sun damage, which sounds perfect in theory. The issue is that you are often trying to correct sun damage while still actively getting more sun exposure. Not exactly a fair fight.
We can still do these treatments, but we need to be selective and smart about timing, sun habits, and your skin type. If you are in the sun frequently or have any color to your skin, this is one we may recommend holding until fall for the best results and safest outcomes.
The Bottom Line
Summer is not a skincare break. It is just a slightly more strategic version of your usual routine.
Injectables, bio-stimulators, microneedling, and laser hair removal are all very doable with a little planning and consistent SPF. Light-based treatments can be done carefully, but often shine brightest once summer winds down.
